Joseph Weiser, Goshen News, Ind. June 28, 2021·2 min read Jun. 28—Local sculptor Sunday Mahaja is making strides to have his work viewed by the masses. Mahaja has been creating metal sculptures for more than six years. Recently his welding equipment was throwing sparks as he worked on a new piece in his garage on the city's south side. Since graduating from Goshen College in 2014 with a degree in art, he has been focusing on creating metal sculptures. "It has been going very well," Mahaja, a native of Nigeria, said. "I've been getting all the support I need in the community and I am looking forward to making my name a household name in the Midwest area and across the ... world."Joseph Weiser, Goshen News, Ind. Flag of HonorFlag of Honor
FLAG OF HONOR Sunday Mahaja Artist Statement Dedicated to the men and women who have fought and those still fighting in the front line for freedom, justice, and peace; also to those who work for equal rights and justice for all. As an artist, I enjoy exploring every aspect of art. I sometime capture historic moments or events and depict it in my own way to give my viewers a different way to see and interact with the moment. I work primarily with found metals and upcycled materials. For the most part my work tend to hold beauty alongside with humor and functionality. The flag of honor is inspired by the iconic photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945, depicting the United State Marines raising the U.S flag on Mount Suribachi. Battle of Iwo Jima, in WW II. FLAG OF HONOR Sunday Mahaja Artist Statement Dedicated to the men and women who have fought and those still fighting in the f...

Give ThanksGive Thanks
For this piece, Sunday was inspired by the Caribbean community. Instead of saying “thank you,” they say “give thanks.” Out of the stump, you see the tree branches stretching upwards as if they are arms outstretched to the sky. The tree is in a posture of give thanks, and reminds us of the people who have invested in Stick Creek Kids. The Give Thanks Tree represents the different ways our donors were able to contribute to make Stick Creek Kids a reality. Each leaf, branch, and insect honors what each financial gift made possible. This piece is now exhibiting in Stick Creek Kids in Woodriver, Nebraska. For this piece, Sunday was inspired by the Caribbean community.
